Nannerchar Upazila (rangamati district) with an area of 393.68 sq km, is bounded by mahalchhari upazila on the northwest, langadu upazila on the northeast, rangamati sadar upazila on the south and southeast, Mahalchhari, lakshmichhari and kawkhali (Rangamati) upazilas on the west. The kaptai lake occupies about one-fifths of the total area of this upazila.



Nannerchar (Town) consists of two mouzas. The area of the town is 23.31 sq. km. The town has a population of 5420; male 56.01%, female 43.99%. Literacy rate among the town people is 46.4%. The town has one dakbungalow.

Administration Nannerchar thana was established in 1979 and was turned into an upazila in 1982. It consists of 4 union parishads, 20 mouzas and 134 villages.

Historical events During the War of Liberation a direct encounter was held between the freedom fighters and the Pak army at village Kadamtali of Burirghat union in which many people were killed and wounded.

Population 34561; male 52.68%, female 47.32%; Muslim 14.34%, Hindu 2.75%, Buddhist 82.70% and others 0.21%.

Literacy and educational institutions Average literacy 33.9%; male 42.6% and female 24.1%. Educational institutions: college 1, high school 5, government primary school 48, non-government primary school 23, madrasa 5.

Main occupations Agriculture 60.43%, agricultural labourer 16%, wage labourer 2.42%, commerce 5.22%, service 4.07%, fishing 2.61%, forestry 1.76% and others 7.49%.

Land use Cultivable land 4806.16 hectares, fallow land 1171.59 hectares.

Land control Among the peasants 10% are landless, 60% small, 25% intermediate and 5% rich.

Value of Land Market value of land of first grade is Tk. 3000 to 5000 per 0.01 hectare.

Main crops Paddy, corn, potato, cotton, tobacco, sugarcane, pulse.

Extinct crops Linseed, sesame.

Main fruits Mango, jackfruit, banana, pineapple, litchi, papaya.

Fisheries, dairies and poultries Fishery 6, poultry 1 and dairy 1.

Communication facilities Roads: pucca 10 km, semi pucca 12 km and mud road 200 km.

Cottage industries Weaving 8, goldsmith 3, blacksmith 10.

Hats and bazars Hats and bazars are 5, most noted of which are Burir Hat and Nannerchar Hat.

Main exports Timber, jackfruit, bamboo.
