Loknath Brahmachari (1730-1890) a Hindu ascetic of Barasat (West Bengal). Loknath Brahmachari came to sonargaon in 1863 AD and established an ashram (monastery) at Baradi. Born at village Kachua in Barasat, he became a mendicant at the age of eleven, travelled through Afghanistan, Persia, Arabia, Palestine, and therefrom repaired to the Himalayas for penance. His spiritual philosophy concerns perceiving the reflection of the Supreme Being (Brahma) in all created beings, eternity of soul (amar atma), attainmnent of perfection (siddhi) by understanding of the self, devotion (bhakti) and penance (yoga), doctrine of action and service to all created beings.



Loknath Brahmachari died in Baradi. A number of ashrams, named after him, are maintained in different parts of Bangladesh and in West Bengal for the propagation of his teachings. [Muazzam Hussain Khan]
