Khyang, The a small tribe of the chittagong hill tracts of Bangladesh. According to the 1991 census, their number in Bangladesh was 2,343. They live in the Rajasthali upazila of Rangamati district and in Chambi and some other mouzas of Bandarban district. A sizeable number of Khyangs live in the arakan region of Myanmar. There they are known as Chins. They are Buddhists. Among the smaller ethnic groups in Bangladesh only the Khyangs follow totemic rites. Some of their clans are known after cats, monkeys and mice. Khyangs have a spoken language of the Kuki-Chin dialect but do not have any written script. [Sadat Ullah Khan] |
