Daulatpur Upazila (manikganj district) with an area of 216.24 sq km, is bounded by chauhali and nagarpur upazilas on the north, shivalaya and ghior upazilas on the south, saturia upazila on the east, bera upazila and jamuna river on the west. Main rivers are Jamuna, dhaleshwari and ichamati. Main depression is Khalsi Beel. Daulatpur (Town) consists of one mouza and three mahallas. It has an area of 4.13 sq km. The town has a population of 5325; male 51.19%, female 48.81%. Literacy rate among the town people is 32.8%. It has one dakbungalow. Administration Daulatpur thana was established in 1919 and was turned into an upazila in 1983. It consists of 8 union parishads, 172 mouzas and 201 villages. Historical events The earlier name of Daulatpur was Govardhanpur, a name which is said to have been originated from an image of Hindu deity designated as Govardhan. In course of time the temple including the image was a victim to river erosion. During the Mughal rule a sufi saint named Daulat Shah came to Govardhanpur, established his khankah and had large number of disciples in the area. Daulatpur is said to have been named after the saint. Population 138606; male 49.62%, female 50.38%; Muslim 91.71%, Hindu 8.24%, Christian 0.028%, others 0.022%. Religious institutions Mosque 206, temple 62, mazar 20, most noted of which is Dhamsar Mazar. Literacy and educational institutions Average literacy 20.15%; male 27.8%, female 12.5%. Educational institutions: college 3, high school 17, madrasa 3, primary school (government) 65, primary school (non-government) 28, NGO operated primary school 40. Cultural organisations Club 28, theatre group 5, women's association 3. Main occupations Agriculture 41.71%, agricultural labourer 26.17%, wage labourer 2.91%, fishing 1.67%, cattle farming 1.1%, commerce 9.7%, service 4.61%, transport 1.39%, construction 1.04%, others 9.7%. Land use Cultivable land 15,497 hectares, fallow land 140 hectares; single crop 25%, double crop 65%, triple crop 10%. Cultivable land under irrigation 31%. Land control Among the peasants 28% are landless, 46% small peasant, 21% intermediate, 5% rich; cultivable land per head 0.11 hectare. Value of land The market value of the first grade arable land is Tk. 6000 per 0.01 hectare. Main crops Jute, mustard, groundnut. Extinct or nearly extinct crops Barley, linseed, kaun. Main fruits Mango, jackfruit, papaya, banana, guava, Fisheries 20. Communication facilities Roads: pucca 13 km, semi pucca 1 km, mud road 178 km; waterways 27 nautical mile. Traditional transport Palanquin, horse carriage, boat, bullock cart. These means of transport (except boat) are extinct or nearly extinct. Manufactories Ice mill 1, saw mill 6. Cottage industries Handloom 200, welding 20, goldsmith 80, blacksmith 150, potteries 100, tailoring 250. Hats bazars and fairs Hats and bazars 43, fair 10, most noted of which are Daulatpur, Jiora, Kalia, Dhamsar, Bachamara, Char Katari. Main exports Groundnut.
