Chak, The an ethnic group living in naikhongchhari upazila of the district of bandarban of the chittagong hill tracts. They came a few centuries ago from the upper regions of the river Iravati of Myanmar through arakan. They now number slightly more than two thousand. Their earliest known leader was Yeng Do. Chaks are divided into two clans - Ando and Yarek. They practice jhum cultivation. They have a language but it has no written form. Inter-tribe marriage is prevalent among them. They now follow buddhism. They wear clothes like the marmas and share many traits of their character. Like Marmas they also burn their dead. [Syed Amirul Islam] |
