Boalkhali Upazila (chittagong district) with an area of 137.53 sq km, is bounded by raozan and rangunia upazilas on the north, patiya upazila on the south, Rangunia upazila on the east and chandgaon thana on the west. Main river is karnafuli; Karaldenga hill and Amuchia forest are noted. Boalkhali (Town) consists of four mouzas. It has an area of 19.35 sq km. The town has a population of 58292; male 53.03%, female 46.97%; population density per sq km 3013. Literacy rate among the town people is 43.4%. It is said that Boalkhali was named after the name of the famous Sufi devotee Hazrat Boali Kalander Shah. Administration Boalkhali thana, now an upazila, was established in 1910. The upazila consists of 10 union parishads, 31 mouzas and 34 villages. Archaeological heritage and relics Sreepur Bura Mosque, Boalkhali Kalander Shah Mazar, Kanungopara Shyamray Mandir and Medos Hermitage. Marks of the War of Liberation Monuments in memory of Shaheed Shantimoy Khastogir and Shaheed Dilip Chowdhury at the premises of Sir Asutosh College, Kanungo Para.
Religious institutions Mosque 198, tomb 15, temple 40, church 1 and pagoda 18. Population 195607; male 51.75%, female 48.25%; Muslim 74.78%, Hindu 22.63% and Buddhist, Christian and others 2.59%. Literacy and educational institutions Average literacy 48.5%; male 54.5%, female 42%. Noted educational institutions: college 4 and primary school 37. Sir Asutosh College (1939) are noted institution Cultural organisations Bandhab Pathagar (library) and Nabarun Literary Society. Main occupations Agriculture 10.37%, fishery and forestry 2.84%, agricultural labourer 10.7%, wage labourer 3.96%, industry 1.55%, commerce 18.17%, transport 3.49%, construction 1.58%, service 29.51% and others 17.83%. Land use Total cultivable land 13562.93 hectares. Value of land The market value of the land of the first grade is approximately Tk 12500 per 0.01 hectare. Main crop Paddy. Extinct or nearly extinct crops Sugarcane, jute. Main fruits Guava, palm. Fisheries, dairies, poultries Fishery 17, dairy 20 and poultry 400. Communication facilities Roads: pucca 27 km, semi pucca 12 km and mud road 437 km; railways 9 km. Traditional transport Palanquin (extinct), horse carriage and bullock cart (nearly extinct), boat. Manufactories Notable manufactories are Regent Textile and TK Paper Mill. Cottage industries Shital pati making (mat made of an aquatic plant). Hats, bazars and fairs Total number of hats and bazars are 4 (Murad Munsi's Hat, Nurullah Munsir Hat, Kalaiyar Hat and Kanungopara Master Bazar). Main exports Cloths, chicken and milk.
