Baghaichhari Upazila (rangamati district)  with an area of 1931.28 sq km is bounded by Tripura and Mizoram State (India) on the north, langadu upazila on the south, Mizoram (India) on the east and dighinala upazila on the west. Main rivers are Kachalang, Shijakh; Ugalchhar Beel and Kaptai Lake are important.



Baghaichhari (Town) consists of one mouza with an area of 23.31 sq km. The town has a population of 12141; male 56.02%, female 43.98%. The density of population is 521 per sq km. Literacy rate among the town people is 43.4%. The town has one dakbungalow.

Administration Baghaichhari thana, now an upazila, was established in 1965. It consists of 7 union parishads, 19 mouzas, 178 villages.

Population 57380; male 53.6%, female 46.4%; Muslim 25.49%, Hindu 6.58%, Christian 1.56%, Buddhist 65.93%, others 0.44%.

Religious institutions Mosque 24, temple 8, church 15, pagoda 15, palitol 3; Ayrjapur Buddha Vihara is notable.

Literacy and educational institutions Average literacy 35.7%; male 45.1%, female 24.6%. Educational institutions: college 1, high school 14, junior high school 8, government primary school 52, non-government primary school 19, madrasa 4.

Cultural organisations Club 24, public library 1, cinema hall 1.

Main occupations Agriculture 57.92%, agricultural labourer 19.89%, wage labourer 4.33%, commerce 4.61%, service 5.5%, others 7.75%.

Land use Total cultivable land 10988 hectares; fallow land 1606 hectares.

Land control Among the peasants 8% are landless, 18% small, 56% intermediate and 18% rich.

Main crops Paddy, wheat, potato, cotton, brinjal, chilli, ginger.

Extinct or nearly extinct crops Wheat, mustard seed.

Main fruits Mango, jackfruit, banana, litchi, black berry, pineapple, guava, papaya.

Communication facilities Roads: pucca 1 km, semi pucca 20 km and mud road 60 km; waterways 44 km.

Traditional transport Palanquin (extinct), horse carriage and bullock cart (nearly extinct), boat.

Manufactories Rice mill 1, ice factory 1, rubber factory 1.

Cottage industries Weaving 11, bamboo & cane work 15, goldsmith 7, blacksmith 9, wood work 17, tailoring 108.

Hats, bazars and fairs Total number of hats and bazars are 5, most noted of which are Baghaichhari and Dudchhari Bazar.

Main exports Banana, papaya, ginger, jackfruit, turmeric, bamboo and cane products.

NGO activities Operationally important NGOs are Green Hill, Bangla German Sampriti.
