Alamdanga Upazila (chuadanga district) with an area of 360.4 sq km is bounded by gangni and mirpur upazilas on the north, chuadanga sadar and damurhuda upazila on the south, kushtia and jhenaidaha sadar and harinakunda upazilas on the east and meherpur sadar on the west. Main rivers are kumar, Nabaganga and Mathabangha. Alamdanga Town a municipal town with an area of 9.59 sq km and a population of 25967; male 50.44%, female 49.56%. It has 9 wards and 18 mahallas. Literacy rate among the town people is 43%. Administration Alamdanga thana was turned into an upazila in 1982. The upazila consists of one municipality, three wards, 12 union parishads, 127 mouzas and 191 villages. Archaeological heritage and relics Gholdari Mosque. Historical events indigo resistance movement spread over Alamdanga in the eighteenth century. Mahesh Chandra Chatterji united the peasants and resisted the indigo planters. During the war of liberation direct encounters were held between the freedom fighters and the Pak army at villages Baliapur and Benagari of the Upazila. In these encounters some members of the Pak army and Razakar were killed. Marks of the War of Liberation Mass grave 1. Population 245524; male 51.66%, female 48.34%; Muslim 96.26%; Hindu 3.53% and others 0.21%. Literacy and educational institutions Average literacy 23.2%; male 28.3%, female 17.7%. Educational institutions: college 4, high school 7, junior high school 4, government primary school 84, non-government primary school 48. Noted institution: Alamdanga High School (1914). Cultural organisations Club 18, public library 1, cinema hall 7, theatre group 2. Main occupations Agriculture 45.36%, agricultural labourer 26.45%, wage labourer 2.29%, weaving 1.61%, industry 1.37%, commerce 12.3%, service 3.57%, transport 1.25% and others 5.8%. Land use Total cultivable land 28939.7 hectares; fallow land 8089; single crop 22.93%, double crop 72.15% and treble crop 4.92%. Land control Among the peasants 30% are landless, 25% marginal, 24% small, 15% intermediate and 6% rich; cultivable land per head 0.15 hectare. Value of land The market value of the land of the first grade is approximately 5500 Taka per 0.01 hectare. Main crops Paddy, wheat, sugarcane, tobacco and betel leaf. Extinct or nearly extinct crops Indigo and mustard seed. Main fruits Mango, jackfruit, papaya, betel nut and banana. Fisheries, dairies, poultries Poultry 12, fishery 2 and dairies 3. Communication facilities Roads- pucca road 56.5 km, semi pucca road 35.5 km and mud road 327.9 km; railway- 22 km. Traditional transport palanquin (extinct), horse carriage (nearly extinct) and boat. Manufactories Rice mill, flour mill, chira mill, ice factory, saw mill, welding, etc. Cottage industries Weaving, bamboo works, goldsmith, blacksmith, potteries, bidi and tailoring. Main hats, bazars Hats and bazars are 24, most noted of which are Munshiganj Hat and Alamdanga Bazar. Main exports Jute, tobacco, betel leaf and betel nut. NGO activities Operationally important NGOs are brac, CARE, asa, WAVE, Sajag and Srijani. Health centres Upazila health complex 1, family planning centre 11 and charitable dispensary 6. [Md.
